what happens in life coaching?
You are ready for life coaching when you have identified what you are looking for in your life. You have goals and dreams, and you seek help in achieving them. Maybe you are looking for more balance, peace, prosperity, health, connection, or joy.
As a coach, I help make your dreams your reality. This is why I call my work an Invitation to Joy: it helps bring people closer to their joy. Coaching is one (imperfect) name for the work I do. I serve as a guide, companion, healer, and teacher.
In our initial conversation, you share what you are looking for, what is currently working well and what is hard. We identify what is blocking your progress (doubt, anxiety, self-criticism, limiting beliefs). We work to discern strategies to move past those blocks.
I listen and hold space for you, asking questions to guide you to think more deeply about your current situation. The goal is to connect you to your awareness and intuition, so that you can discern what you need to do next.
In our coaching sessions you find wholehearted support for your goals and dreams. You feel excited about the possibilities ahead. Then how do you stay rooted in the enthusiasm and confidence you find in our conversations?
You have beliefs and knowledge that help you feel inspired, encouraged and confident in your goals. We create ways for you to stay rooted in these beliefs. To do so, we draw on work in self-development, psychology, spirituality and mindfulness practices.
At the end of each session, we will agree on intermediate steps for you to work on until the next time. This is your "homework," tasks to keep you focused and advancing toward your goals.
Consider the visual overview of the coaching in this video. It illustrates the flow of the coaching process, which is tailored to each client's needs, temperament and situation.
who do you coach? what do you coach them on?
I primarily work with teenage girls and women looking to feel better in mind, body, and spirit. Often we think about others to the detriment of ourselves. My goal is to support women in finding the balance of caring for themselves and others. Self-care is a term you hear thrown around a lot; working with me, you will be able to define what it means for you.
I work with high schoolers who are navigating the stresses of school, work, extracurricular activities and relationships. I support these young women in maintaining healthy communication patterns, setting boundaries, and working toward personal goals.
I work with women who are juggling work, relationships, and new (or approaching) motherhood. I support my clients as they establish their personal and professional goals, develop communication skills, and prioritize self-care and personal development.
Work with me for help in identifying and communicating your own needs. Learn to state your needs and to create time to meet them. As you do this, you will see your relationships, health and energy change!
what is the first step?
We will hold a free initial conversation (in person or on the phone) for 20 – 30 minutes. You will explain what you’re looking for and we will identify some initial steps you can take. We will see if this feels like a good fit.
You will let me know when you are ready to commit to a coaching cycle, and we will schedule our first set of appointments!
what is the commitment?
This is your Invitation to Joy: an opportunity to reset your mind, body, and spirit over the course of a month to two months. We will meet weekly or biweekly for four 50-minute sessions. These can be in person, on the phone or videoconference, as you like.
Over the course of 1-2 months, you will see your mindset and energy change. You will feel focused, encouraged and inspired and proud of yourself. Other people will notice, too; they will see you are lighter, more peaceful and content.
At the end of a cycle, you will see how far you have come. You will discern if there is further work to do, perhaps in the same area of your life or another. You will choose to begin another month-long cycle, or wait until you are ready and it is the right time.
You commit to this work because you are ready for change. You want to reset your current ways of thinking and adopt new ones that support your goals. You say yes to the invitation for guidance and support.
Logistical note: I have a 24-hour cancellation policy and communicate with clients via text message to set up appointments.
why invest in coaching?
Let's take a common example that comes up in my coaching practice. You need to develop your voice. By asserting your needs at home and at work, you can achieve your goals. You will share parenting responsibilities and have better work-life balance.
Stating your needs and boundaries at work is called negotiating. Stating your needs and boundaries at home is called communication. All of this is a kind of self-care: you care for yourself as you advocate for yourself.
Like anything, communication and negotiation skills can be taught and practiced. You can be self-taught, you can learn in a large-group setting, and/or you can have one-on-one support.
To be self-taught, you can explore the myriad books and blogs and online videos on communication skills and negotiation. To learn in a large-group setting, you can sign up for a training module or workshop. For one-on-one support, you can get a coach.
Committing to working with a coach is akin to signing up to work with a personal trainer versus attending the gym. It’s like paying for a private tutoring session with a teacher versus attending a lecture-style class.
Working with a coach helps clarify your goals and the relevant needs and boundaries you need to communicate to others. We discuss what is blocking you from stating your needs; we work past doubt and fear. We break down the process into manageable steps. We practice strategies, create scripts to follow, and identify positive influences and models for you.
We do not focus on the past (as you might in psychotherapy). We stay rooted in the present moment and look at what you can change for the future. Life coaching is very powerful because it accelerates your transformation, starting now. You can choose to be the change you want to see in your world!
